House painting in Lawton, Oklahoma

Interior and exterior painting, with the preparation that makes it last. Southwest Oklahoma sun is hard on paint, and shortcuts show within a season.

Preparation

The brush is the last part of the job

Paint fails where the surface underneath was never fixed. Chalked siding, open caulk joints, nail holes, a patch of bare wood on the south elevation: cover any of those and the new coat lifts inside a year.

John scrapes, sands, patches and caulks before he opens a tin. On exteriors that means washing the chalk off first and priming any wood that has gone bare. On interiors it means filling and sanding the walls rather than rolling over them.

Exteriors

Paint, or paint plus the roof above it

Plenty of Lawton houses need the roof and the paint in the same season. Doing both with one contractor saves you a second mobilisation and stops the argument about who scuffed the fresh trim with a ladder.

If the roof is going on too, John schedules it first and paints after, so the finished coat is the last thing that happens to the house.

Questions

About painting

Does an exterior need repainting every few years?
It depends on the elevation. South and west walls take the sun and go first, and John will often recommend doing those on a shorter cycle than the rest of the house.
Do you paint cabinets?
Yes. Cabinet doors need degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer before color, and skipping any of the three is why painted cabinets chip.
Who buys the paint?
Either of you. Some customers want a specific brand and finish, and John prices the labor around it.
Can you paint and re-roof at the same time?
He schedules the roof first and the paint after, so ladders and tear-off debris never land on a fresh coat.
